For the past decade, the Lithuanian artist Patricija Gilytė, who is based in Germany, has been documenting the status quo and the changes of specific sites from an artist’s perspective. In the solo exhibition EQUINOX, she is presenting her latest installation EQUINOX K-7392, produced this year in Klaipėda, alongside her installation TRI-GALAXIAN L-4116, site-specifically created in Linz, Austria in 2014.
Over the ages, human life has not only been linked to specific geographical locations, but also to expansion and travel in space and time, to virtual motion in dreams, ambitions, and fantasies, and to real steps taken through science – creating devices and technologies to help navigate the universe and the world. Although developments and opportunities multiply constantly, there are still those who rely on natural senses and rhythms, such as the change of seasons and day and night. One of these natural rhythms is the equinox – in the case of this installation, the Autumn Equinox.
Here, the Klaipėda cityscape is the core of Gilytė’s work. Spending time in Klaipėda at different times of the year, she observed the city, while simultaneously analysing different levels of colour, sound, mood and emotion, alongside the more stable elements of architecture and repetitive forms. She transferred her observations into images in a stop-motion animation using 7,392 candles. By lighting or extinguishing individual candles, the artist establishes a visual narrative of the city as a continuously changing constellation.

“Since Klaipėda is not my habitual residence, I start by observing the city. After a while, I begin to recognise its characteristic forms, to try to control them, classify them according to certain criteria and consider how I will use them in my work. I stop at new scenes, which turn into my own discoveries, though those sights have long ago become city routine for Klaipėda residents: seagulls on the rooftops of Liepų Street houses, Sunday bells in the post office tower or merging ship silhouettes… I later combine certain elements captured in the city into dotted candle images; and viewers, even without recognising specific fragments, can discover themselves within that whole.
The main visual message of my work is movement – trajectories. I compare the city with a galaxy. If there were no humans, the ‘City Galaxy’ would stop: no ships would sail, the thudding sounds of the Biržos Bridge would cease, the streets would freeze and only the movement of sun-cast shadows over the surfaces of buildings would remain… And only the cosmic galaxies would continue to spin. Every person moving in the city – making their way to work, walking along the quay, walking a dog, carrying goods, preparing a cup of coffee, picking up garbage, waiting for a bus or watching the waves at the beach – becomes part of the city’s movement and city life, as well as a separate point of light.”
The soundtrack accompanying EQUINOX K-7392 was specifically created by the composer, performer and sound artist Donatas Bielkauskas, a.k.a. Donis. The project was realised at the Western Shipyard; Patricija Gilytė was supported by her technical team: Nerijus Jankauskas, Pavel Ochrimenko, Loreta Patašienė and Andrius Pelakauskas.

Seit über einem Jahrzehnt dokumentiert die litauische Künstlerin Patricija Gilytė, die in Deutschland lebt, den Status quo und die Veränderungen spezifischer Orte aus der Perspektive einer Künstlerin. In der Ausstellung EQUINOX präsentiert sie ihre neueste Installation EQUINOX K-7392, produziert in diesem Jahr in Klaipėda, sowie ihre 2014 entstandene Installation TRI-GALAXIAN L-4116, die site-spezifisch für die Stadt Linz, Österreich, realisiert wurde.
Im Laufe der Geschichte war das menschliche Leben nicht nur an bestimmte geografische Orte gebunden, sondern auch an Bewegung – in Raum und Zeit, in Träumen, Ambitionen und Fantasien sowie an reale Schritte, die durch Wissenschaft und Technologie ermöglicht wurden, um die Welt und das Universum zu erkunden. Obwohl sich Entwicklungen und Möglichkeiten ständig vervielfachen, gibt es weiterhin Menschen, die sich auf natürliche Sinne und Rhythmen verlassen, wie den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten oder Tag und Nacht. Einer dieser natürlichen Rhythmen ist die Tagundnachtgleiche – im Fall dieser Installation die Herbst-Tagundnachtgleiche.
Der Klaipėda-Stadtbildraum bildet den Kern von Gilytės Arbeit. Während ihrer Aufenthalte in Klaipėda zu verschiedenen Jahreszeiten beobachtete sie die Stadt als Ganzes und analysierte gleichzeitig unterschiedliche Ebenen von Farbe, Klang, Stimmung und Emotion sowie stabilere architektonische Elemente und wiederkehrende Formen. Ihre Beobachtungen übertrug sie in Bilder einer Stop-Motion-Animation unter Verwendung von 7.392 Kerzen. Durch das Anzünden oder Löschen einzelner Kerzen erzeugt die Künstlerin ein visuelles Narrativ der Stadt als kontinuierlich wechselnde Konstellation.
Künstlerin zu ihrer Arbeit:
„Da Klaipėda nicht mein gewöhnlicher Wohnort ist, beginne ich mit der Beobachtung der Stadt. Nach einer Weile erkenne ich ihre charakteristischen Formen, versuche sie zu kontrollieren, nach bestimmten Kriterien zu klassifizieren und überlege, wie ich sie in meiner Arbeit einsetzen werde. Ich bleibe bei neuen Szenen stehen, die zu eigenen Entdeckungen werden, obwohl diese Ansichten für die Bewohner Klaipėdas längst zum Alltag gehören: Möwen auf den Dächern der Häuser in der Liepų-Straße, Sonntagsglocken im Postturm oder verschmelzende Schiffssilhouetten … Später kombiniere ich bestimmte Elemente, die ich in der Stadt eingefangen habe, zu punktierten Kerzenbildern; und die Betrachter*innen können sich, auch ohne die einzelnen Fragmente zu erkennen, innerhalb des Ganzen wiederfinden.
Die zentrale visuelle Botschaft meiner Arbeit ist Bewegung – Trajektorien. Ich vergleiche die Stadt mit einer Galaxie. Gäbe es keine Menschen, würde die ‚Stadtgalaxie‘ stillstehen: keine Schiffe würden fahren, das dumpfe Geräusch der Biržos-Brücke würde verstummen, die Straßen würden einfrieren, und nur die Bewegung der sonnenbeschienenen Schatten über den Oberflächen der Gebäude bliebe… Und nur die kosmischen Galaxien würden sich weiterdrehen. Jede Person, die sich in der Stadt bewegt – auf dem Weg zur Arbeit, am Kai entlang, mit dem Hund spazierend, Waren transportierend, einen Kaffee zubereitend, Müll aufhebend, auf den Bus wartend oder die Wellen am Strand beobachtend – wird Teil der städtischen Bewegung und des städtischen Lebens, zugleich aber auch zu einem eigenen Lichtpunkt.“
Die begleitende Klanginstallation zu EQUINOX K-7392 wurde speziell von dem Komponisten, Performer und Klangkünstler Donatas Bielkauskas, a.k.a. Donis, geschaffen. Das Projekt wurde im Western Shipyard realisiert; Patricija Gilytė wurde dabei von ihrem technischen Team unterstützt: Nerijus Jankauskas, Pavel Ochrimenko, Loreta Patašienė und Andrius Pelakauskas.
